July, 2005

God is love
Call on the name of Jesus

Jesus is your best friend

He will save your soul

God is in control

Follow him

(July 28, 2005 6:17 AM CDT)

Last night I took a tour of the new building
under construction at the Siena/Francis House.
It's a big place.
It will be ready in October.

My printer ran out of black ink,
so I need to get it refilled today.
I've been printing too many things lately
like maps and directions.

"O Lord, you have probed me and you know me;
you know when I sit and when I stand;
you understand my thoughts from afar."
Psalm 139:1-2

The Lord knows all about you.
He knows when you are happy or sad.
He cares about you.
He understands.
He is concerned about you.
He made you.
You are his.
He is watching over you.

(July 27, 2005 6:15 AM CDT)

Yesterday I had lunch downtown with someone
that was born the day before my birthday last year.

Here is one of my favorite Scripture verses
from page 1331 of my Bible.

"We know that God makes all things work together
for the good of those who love God and
are called according to his decree."
Romans 8:28

There are a lot of things
that I don't understand in this life.
Why did this or that happen?
Why are things this way?
Why?
I don't know.
I don't understand it all.
But I trust in God.
He is in control.
He is watching over me.
One day he will bring me home safely.
It will all work out in the end.

(July 26, 2005 6:16 AM CDT)

This was one of the Bible readings at Cathedral
on Sunday at 5:30 PM.

Jesus said to his disciples:
"The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field,
which a person finds and hides again,
and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
searching for fine pearls.
When he finds a pearl of great price,
he goes and sells all that he has and buys it."
Matthew 13:44-46

The other day I was watching the end of Jeopardy!
for a few minutes at my Mom's house.
It was the last answer and this person
had waged $14K everything that she had
and got the question wrong.
The question was "Who was John Wayne?"
She lost it all trying to win.
The thing with Jesus is that there is no risk.
You will win.
You sell everything.
You give all that you are.
You win.
The searching is easy.
Your search is over.
You have found the pearl.
It is that close to you.

(July 25, 2005 6:16 AM CDT)

I heard this on TV yesterday morning.

"See, I am doing something new!"
Isaiah 43:19

The Lord has surprises for us each day.
You wakeup and don't know what to expect.
There is something new.
It is a new day.
The question is...can you visualize it?

(July 24, 2005 6:53 AM CDT)

(Update at 8:25 PM:
Here are some pictures from a few hours ago
of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
My car said it was 102 F degrees at one point.
Picture 1 is the lily pads on the east side of Lake Manawa.
I had a sneezing attack after taking this picture.
I guess I'm allergic to them.
Pictures 2 and 3 are of the Missouri River
just south of Lake Manawa.
Notice the red flag.
That means a person is in the water.
Pictures 4 and 5 are on the west side of Lake Manawa.
Pictures 6 and 7 are at 7th and Willow Ave.
They can now take pictures of people running red lights
and send them a fine to pay.
Pictures 8 and 9 are from Lookout Point
in Fairmount Park looking west at the Omaha skyline.
Pictures 10 and 11 are at 16th and Broadway.
Once again smile for the cameras
as you run the red light.

This morning I installed
Quicken Deluxe 2005 on my PC.
I'm trying to figure it out,
but it is going to take some time.

"In times past,
God spoke in fragmentary and varied ways
to our fathers through the prophets;
in this, the final age,
he has spoken to us through his Son,
whom he has made heir of all things and
through whom he first created the universe.
This Son is the reflection of the Father's glory,
the exact representation of the Father's being,
and he sustains all things by his powerful word."
Hebrews 1:1-3

It is clear.
Jesus came in person.
He spoke plainly to the people.
His words and actions are captured in the Bible.
Read them.
Think about them.
He is God.
He is trying to communicate with you.
Reflect on that.

(July 23, 2005 6:37 AM CDT)

"...and the life I live now is not my own;
Christ is living in me.
I still live my human life,
but it is a life of faith in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave himself for me.
I will not treat God's gracious gift as pointless."
Galatians 2:20-21

Live the life of faith.
Let Christ in.
Let go.
Give up control.
Let him drive.
That is the point.

(July 22, 2005 6:19 AM CDT)

This morning I'm reading about anaphylactic shock .
Those two words keep playing over and over in my mind.
I think I have been watching too much ER.

Did you know that in the Omaha area
you can listen to WOWT TV Channel 6
on the radio at 87.7 FM?
I wonder if this happens in other cities.
My Walkman can pickup all the local TV stations,
but it is designed to do that.

Jesus said,
"Everyone who practices evil hates the light;
he does not come near it
for fear his deeds will be exposed."
John 3:20

That is a good test for you.
If you did something questionable,
would you want the world to know about it?
If you do what is right, you love the light.
You have nothing to hide.
Really.
Do good.
It makes life much less complicated.
It definitely will help you get to heaven.

(July 21, 2005 6:14 AM CDT)

Good morning!
Last night I saw this movie from the year 2000.
It is titled
Return To Me .
It was a cute movie.
I saw it in what used to be
the library of the high school
I attended many years ago.
It even had air conditioning,
which we never had when I was in school there.
You can watch the trailer on the link above.

"Yet even now, says the Lord,
return to me with your whole heart..."
Joel 2:12

It is that time.
Return to the Lord.
Get a new heart.
The Lord loves you very much.

(July 20, 2005 6:11 AM CDT)

Someone wrote to me this morning
that has lung cancer.
Please, pray for them.
God be with him and his family.

"The grace of God has appeared,
offering salvation to all people.
It trains us to reject godless ways
and worldly desires, and live temperately,
justly, and devoutly in this age
as we await our blessed hope,
the appearing of the glory of the great God
and of our Savior Christ Jesus.
It was he who sacrificed himself for us,
to redeem us from all unrighteousness and
to cleanse for himself a people of his own,
eager to do what is right."
Titus 2:11-14

Be eager to do the right thing.
Live justly.
The grace is there.
Grab hold of it.
You need it.
A blessed hope is yours.

(July 19, 2005 6:18 AM CDT)

Yesterday the doctor said the intraocular pressure (IOP)
in my eyes was normal (left/right 19/18 mmHg).
The eye drops were doing their job.
The cataract in my right eye had not changed.
I told him to pray for a miracle
for it to go away.
I don't think he took me seriously.

Last night I was reading about
St. John Vianney .
He was very humble.
"He never allowed himself to be photographed."
Thousands of people came to see him.
The furniture in his bedroom would move around,
as the devil tried to disturb his sleep.
One time he was preaching
and no one could hear him,
since "his voice was so frail."
His life was a sermon.

Last night as I walked at Westroads I started to read
a book that I checked out from the library yesterday.
It is titled
Small Change by Susan and Larry Terkel.
(I read about this in the newspaper on September 24, 2004.
I'm not too quick at reacting.)
One thing it suggests is to have
just one new year's resolution.
Just concentrate on that one change.
Do it daily.
It becomes a habit after a month.
Next month work on another change.
I will share more as I keep reading.

"Once, on the sabbath, we went outside the city gate
to the bank of the river, were we thought
there would be a place of prayer.
We sat down and spoke
to the women who were gathered there.
One who listened was a woman named Lydia,
a dealer in purple goods from the town of Thyatira.
She already reverenced God, and the Lord
opened her heart to accept what Paul was saying.
After she and her household had been baptized,
she extended us an invitation."
Acts 16:13-15

Read a little of the Bible daily.
Open your heart to what God has to say.
Make it a habit.
Reverence God.
He is so awesome.
Come sit down at the river and listen.

(July 18, 2005 6:10 AM CDT)

This was one of the scripture readings
yesterday at 5:30 PM at Cathedral :

"Brothers and sisters:
The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness;
for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.
And the one who searches hearts
knows what is the intention of the Spirit,
because he intercedes for the holy ones
according to God's will."
Romans 8:26-27

He is there looking.
He is searching.
What does he see in your heart?
Is it a kind heart?
Is it sincere?
What shape is it?

(July 17, 2005 6:30 AM CDT)

The air conditioner is running this morning,
so that means it is going to be
a really warm day.

Last night I was looking at maps of Los Angeles.
It is a big place.
The address of LAX is 300 World Way, Los Angeles.
With that you can get driving directions
from there to other places.

"Jesus took Peter, John and James,
and went up onto a mountain to pray.
While he was praying,
his face changed in appearance and
his clothes became dazzlingly white."
Luke 9:28-29

Jesus will lead you to the mountains.
You will get to know him better.
He will spend time with you.
He will teach you new things.
Follow him.
Stay close.

(July 16, 2005 6:28 AM CDT)

"Rising early the next morning,
Jesus went off to a lonely place in the desert;
there he was absorbed in prayer."
Mark 1:35

If it was important for Jesus to pray,
how much more important it is for us.
Find a quiet place.
Spend that time with the Lord.
Take a few minutes each day to be absorbed.

(July 15, 2005 6:18 AM CDT)

Last night I was reading about
Universal Studios Hollywood .
I printed out a map of the place.

Last night Erik was over at my house.
He was here to give me an estimate on
replacing my furnace and AC.
He commented on this picture by Harry Anderson
hanging in my basement.
He said he knew the person on the left,
but who is the person on the right.
I told him I did not know.
A president or statesman?
It is from my sister's apartment.
I was given it after she died a few years ago.
It has this scripture verse at the bottom of it:

"Blessed is the man that walketh
not in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor in the way of sinners,
nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful."
Psalm 1:1

Sit there in the presence of Jesus.
Converse with him.
He is there to listen.
He is very wise counsel.
Take some time with him.
He is your map.

(July 14, 2005 6:15 AM CDT)

"Bless the Lord, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits;
He pardons all your iniquities,
he heals all your ills.
He redeems your life from destruction,
he crowns you with kindness and compassion.
He fills your lifetime with good;
your youth is renewed like the eagle's."
Psalms 103:1-5

The Lord is good.
He is wonderful.
He is amazing.
Be young again.
Start all over.

(July 13, 2005 6:15 AM CDT)

You can learn from my mistake.
Last night I had a small
Dairy Queen Brownie Batter Blizzard
at the food court at Westroads Mall.
It's only 630 calories.
It was WAY too much chocolate.

Recently I came up with an idea for an invention.
It would be an alarm to alert a parent that
a child is still in the car after the car is locked.
Other people have the same idea.
Every once in awhile you read in the newspaper
about a parent who forgets their
child in a car seat and the child dies.
This can be prevented.

"What we are aiming at in this warning
is the love that springs from a pure heart,
a good conscience, and sincere faith."
1 Timothy 1:5

We need warnings.
We need alarms.
We can avoid mistakes.
A good conscience will give you that.
It tells you of danger and possible death.
We need to be reminded.
Talk to the Lord about this.
He will instruct you and keep you safe from harm.

(July 12, 2005 6:18 AM CDT)

"This means you are strangers and aliens no longer.
No, you are fellow citizens of the saints
and members of the household of God.
You form a building which rises
on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
with Jesus Christ himself as the capstone.
Through him the whole structure is fitted together
and takes shape as a holy temple in the Lord;
in him you are being built into this temple,
to become a dwelling place for God in the Spirit."
Ephesians 2:19-22

Don't be a stranger.
Talk to God.
Express your thoughts to him.
You are part of the household.
You are inside the door.
Speak freely and confidently.
Make it fit.

(July 11, 2005 6:17 AM CDT)

Yesterday I went for a ride to see Neola, Iowa .
It is exit 23 on Interstate-80 northeast of Omaha.
I have been there several times.
I went to see the cross on top of St. Patrick's Church.
This is right next to St. Joseph's School.
Why are there two different names?
I have friends who grew up in Neola, so I will ask them.

Paul said,
"I always strive to keep my conscience clear
before God and man."
Acts 24:16

You need a good conscience.
You need to know right from wrong.
The Holy Spirit is there to help you with this.
Reading the Bible will instruct you.
Good sermons will keep you informed and thinking.
Confession is good for the soul.
Even Joel mentioned confession in yesterday's program.

(July 10, 2005 6:57 AM CDT)

The Madison Nebraska County Fair and Rodeo is this week.

I saw the National Treasure movie yesterday.
It is interesting to watch Ben and Riley and Abigail
searching for the treasure hidden somewhere
in all these historic places (WDC, Philadelphia, NYC),
if they can only figure out the clues.
I liked it.
The DVD had games that kids can play on cryptography .
It was even educational...amazing.
For example here is a one letter code message:
IDRTR KNUDR XNT.
Now take each letter and
go to the next letter in the alphabet.
For example if the letter is "W"
the hidden letter is "X".
One letter coded messages are very easy to break.

Jesus said,
"Do not lay up for yourselves an earthly treasure.
Moths and rust corrode;
thieves break in and steal.
Make it your practice instead
to store up heavenly treasure,
which neither moths nor rust corrode
nor thieves break in and steal.
Remember, where your treasure is,
there your heart is also."
Matthew 6:19-21

The DVD also had stories about real life treasure hunters
in the mountains and under the ocean.
Why?
Why do it?
Your treasure is in heaven.
It is a great adventure to get there.
It is an awesome challenge.
Can you read the clues in the Bible?
They are easy clues.
Follow Jesus.
He will lead you to treasure beyond your wildest dreams.

(July 9, 2005 6:21 AM CDT)

A few days ago I watched the movie
Napoleon Dynamite .
My nephew told me about it last year.
You have this high school election
between Pedro and Summer and
you never find out who wins.
I asked my nephew last night,
"Who won the election?"
You don't know.
You see "Vote for Pedro" T-shirts around Omaha ---
that is from this movie.
It has made Preston High School in Preston, Idaho famous.
Here is a movie clip I found of where
Napoleon and Pedro meet .
Click on Clip #1.
...
Continued at 8:49 AM.
To me the movie was not that funny,
but I understand it is very popular with
high school students in 2005, like my nephew.

I'm watering the front lawn this morning.
It is drying up.

This morning I'm going to play some racquetball soon.

I rented a movie "National Treasure" at the
store at 132nd and Dodge this morning.
I will let you know what I think of it after I view it.

Recently I finished watching 10 years of ER reruns.
It took over 5 months.
It was about 220 episodes that are an hour long.
I would watch it on videotape and skip over the commercials.
I can't say that I am "proud" of this accomplishment.
It is a "soap opera" type program.
Christian values are not there usually.
Very few of the main characters are married.
It could harm your faith.
I know it has changed me ---
I just wonder HOW it has changed me.
One thing I "treasure" from the all the programs I watched
are the last words of Dr. Mark Green in Hawaii
to his daughter Rachel:
(From "On the Beach" 5/9/2002 Season 8 Episode 21.)

"I was trying to figure out what I should already told you
but I never have. Something important, something every father
should impart to his daughter. Finally got it...
generosity.
Be generous,
with your time,
with your love,
with your life.
...
Be generous, always."

Wonderful...
An excellent thought...

"In Christ and through faith in him
we can speak freely to God,
drawing near him with confidence.
Hence, I beg you not to be disheartened
by the trials I endure for you;
they are for your glory."
Ephesians 3:12-13

Again, the Lord says to talk to him.
Tell him what you think.
Tell him your troubles.
Tell him what is on your mind.
In the end there is glory.
Hang in there.

Bye...time for racquetball...

(July 8, 2005 6:11 AM CDT)

Usually in the morning I listen to 100.7 FM KGBI
around the house,
but they are off the air for some reason.
You can listen to them online,
which obviously won't help you much in a car.
Pray for them to get it fixed.

Last night I played Ping Pong (Table Tennis)
at Faith Presbyterian Church at 81st and Giles
in La Vista, Nebraska.
Most people call it Ping Pong,
but there they called it Table Tennis.
That is the official name of the sport.
It costs $3, but since it was my first night
I got to play for free.
Their web site above says you can play from 7 PM to 10:30 PM.
I played off and on from 7 PM to 9 PM.
I lost every game, but I had fun.
I used to play every day after school
when I was growing up.
I am "rusty" and need some practice.
I met some new people.
We play in the gym.
There were 6 or 7 tables.
I found out that my paddle was "not official".
I just bought it last year
after I was given a Ping Pong table for free.
They changed the rules.
How could they?
You used to take turns alternating serving 5 times,
now it is 2.
You used to play until 21 points, now it is 11.
I guess it is because of inflation or something like that
or shorter attention spans.
You play 3 out of 5 games, since I lost every game
I never played more than 3 games against anyone.
I was no competition to them.
Yes, I need to practice.

"May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you."
Romans 16:20

A wonderful gift is grace.
It is given to you.
Receive this blessing from above.
On one side of the church we were playing
on the other side they were praying and singing.
We could hear them.
There were many young people there.
It was a blessed setting.
I felt right at home.

(July 7, 2005 6:16 AM CDT)

59 years ago today (7/7/1946) at 7:20 PM
the XF-11 crashed in Beverly Hills.
It is interesting to read about William Durkin
who pulled Howard Hughes away from the burning plane.
He took no money as a reward for doing this.
He was a true hero.

(July 6, 2005 6:11 AM CDT)

(Update at 9:47 PM:
Here are the pictures from the zoo on July 4th.
Pictures 1 thru 5 are in the Desert Dome.
They did a fantastic job on this.
Picture 6 is the penguins, which are so cute.
Picture 7 is a giraffe.
Picture 8 is a pipe fish in the Scott Aquarium.
Picture 9 are angel fishes, maybe, I'm not sure.
I tried to take pictures of the sharks and stingrays,
but they would not hold still.
Both are just really cool to watch.
Pictures 10 thru 12 are the new Orangutan Forest.
Picture 13 is a tunnel for the orangutans.
I read about it in the newspaper many months ago
and finally got to see it in person.
Picture 14 is the Desert Dome with one of those
rotating globes in front of it.
It reminded me of the globe at Village Pointe Mall
I saw on November 5, 2004 .
(There is a picture of it on this link for November 6, 2004.)

1: 2: 3: 4:

13: 14:
)

Jesus said,
"I myself am the bread of life.
No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry,
no one who believes in me shall ever thirst."
John 6:35

Is there something missing from your life?
Do you feel empty?
There is a hole in your heart
that only Jesus can fill.
He will fill the void.
He will complete you.

(July 5, 2005 6:14 AM CDT)

I was at the Omaha Zoo yesterday.
I took about 60 pictures,
so I will post some later.

Jesus said,
"Whoever would preserve his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake
and the gospel's will preserve it.
What profit does a man show
who gains the whole world
and destroys himself in the process.
What can a man offer in exchange for his life!"
Mark 8:35-37

How do you keep your life?
How do you save your life?
The world says to have power and wealth,
but God says something different.
It is in giving that you receive.

(July 4, 2005 8:41 AM CDT)

It rained overnight.

This morning I'm reading about the
National Balloon Classic
in Indianola, Iowa July 29 to August 6, 2005.
It is just south of Des Moines, Iowa.
I've never had a ride in a hot air balloon.

I saw the fireworks last night over Rosenblatt Stadium.
My family watched from about a mile northeast.
They had smiley faces that I had never seen before.
They spelled out the letters "USA"
with red, white and blue.
Cool!
There were several that looked like a large
tan ball all filled in --- that was different.
We listened to the music on the radio.
They started with Lee Greenwood's
"God Bless the USA" , of course.
(Track 10 on this link.)
There is a picture and story on the front page
of the newspaper this morning about the fireworks.

Jesus said,
"In the evening you say,
'Red sky at night, the day will be bright';
but in the morning,
'Sky red and gloomy, the day will be stormy.'
If you know how to interpret
the look of the sky,
can you not read the signs of the times?"
Matthew 16:2-3

You read the newspaper.
You see the news on the TV.
There is evil in the world.
It is so sad.
It takes good people to stand up against it.
Be a sign for our time.
Do good and overcome evil.

(July 3, 2005 6:21 AM CDT)

"Happy are you who fear the Lord,
who walk in his ways!
For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork;
happy shall you be, and favored."
Psalms 128:1-2

Should you be scared of the Lord?
No, it should be a great respect ---
someone that you honor and praise ---
someone that you adore.
You surrender your life to him.
You give up control.
It takes trust.
It takes faith,
but then you find happiness and peace.
You will be favored.
You will be blessed.
There will be fruit.

(July 2, 2005 9:13 AM CDT)

Yesterday I became a tourist and
went to see Springfield, Nebraska
the home of the Sarpy County Fair August 3-7, 2005.
I will post some pictures when I get a chance.
Here are the pictures.
Picture 1 is the Fair and Rodeo.
Picture 2 is the tent for fireworks.
Pictures 3, 4 and 5 are Main Street.
Picture 6 is the church on 9th and Main.
As I was taking that picture a van driver asked
where Platteview Road was and I told him I did not know.
I was just a tourist from out-of-town.
Pictures 7, 8 and 9 are Platteview Road at 132nd Street
taken in different directions.
That is the water town at 13002 Platteview Road
according to Springfield's Web site above.
It looks like it is leaning, right?,
or maybe that is an "optical delusion."
The corn does not look too bad in picture 9.
Knee high by the 4th of July, as they say.
Now I know where Platteview Road is
for the next time someone asks.

1: 2: 3:
4: 5: 6:
7: 8: 9:

At church yesterday morning at Girls and Boys Town
they introduced the new head guy Rev. Steve Boes .
God bless him and his efforts to help these kids.
I took pictures of Boys Town also,
but I missed the 9:25 AM ceremony.

"My little ones,
I am writing this to keep you from sin.
But if anyone should sin,
we have, in the presence of the Father,
Jesus Christ, an intercessor who is just.
He is an offering for our sins,
and not for our sins only,
but for those of the whole world."
1 John 2:1-2

Avoid sin.
Stay away from the darkness.
It will destroy you.
It will kill your joy.
It will take all your dreams away.
Ask Jesus to forgive you.
Start over again.
He did this for everyone --- even you.
Forgiveness is yours for the asking.

(July 1, 2005 6:26 AM CDT)

"I continually thank my God for you
because of the favor
he has bestowed on you in Christ Jesus,
in whom you have been richly endowed
with every gift of speech and knowledge."
1 Corinthians 1:4-5

We are all unique.
We are all made by God.
We're all different.
We are special in our own ways.
You have many gifts.
You have been blessed.
Have a conversion with the Lord today.
Talk to him.
Tell him thanks for all
that he has given to you.
