April, 2009

Jesus is coming soon
Prepare the way of the Lord

Jesus is the light of the world

Open your heart

God is love

Thank the Lord

(April 30, 2009 Thu 6:20 AM CDT and 8:03 AM CDT)

Yesterday I made Hershey's Ultimate Chocolate Brownie Mix .
I made two 13 by 9 pans of brownies and cut them up.
I have no more room in my freezer to store things.

Yesterday I was disoriented.
I did not know what day it was.
My schedule changes everyday.
I can't keep track.

I have a class today at 10 AM on LinkedIn .
I have 9 contacts now.
The class yesterday on LHH - CRN was very useful.
There is a lot of information there.
Some of the information is on the
Omaha Public Library web site .

"That night the Lord appeared at Paul's side and said:
'Keep up your courage!
Just as you have given testimony
to me here in Jerusalem,
so must you do in Rome.'"
Acts 23:11

Ask the Lord for courage.
He will respond.
He will be by your side.
Jesus, help me today.
Give me courage.
Send me where you want me to go.

(April 29, 2009 Wed 6:10 AM CDT)

Today I have an online LHH class at 11:30 AM.

"Peter had not finished these words
when the Holy Spirit descended
upon all who were listening to Peter's message."
Acts 10:44

Pray for those giving sermons.
Pray for your pastor.
We need inspirational preaching.
Jesus, send your Holy Spirit.
Come and inspire us.
We are listening.

(April 28, 2009 Tue 8:46 AM CDT)

Yesterday was the last class at LHH.
I was asking myself this morning:
what do I do now?
It was a let down.
Take some of their online classes I guess.
I was talking to someone yesterday in sales.
He knows someone that made $500K
one year on commissions.
Maybe I should learn how to sell.

I went to a wake last night
for a neighbor in my old neighborhood.
Pray for him and his family.
God bless them and be with them.

I am still studying PHP.
I am in chapter 6 of the book.
It is not that complicated.

You know me --- I ordered another book yesterday:
Macromedia MX - Building Rich Internet Applications
It only cost $2.00 plus shipping.
I am going to have to buy another bookcase.

"Then they led Jesus off to the high priest,
and all the chief priests, the elders
and the scribes came together.
Peter followed him at a distance
right into the high priest's courtyard,
where he found a seat with the temple guard
and began to warm himself at the fire."
Mark 14:53-54

You need to follow Jesus.
Yes, there is danger.
Yes, there will be hardships.
Stay near to the Lord.
He is your warmth.

(April 27, 2009 Mon 6:25 AM CDT)

I just applied for a job at University of Nebraska Omaha
that I saw in the newspaper yesterday.
It is for a Software Developer II.
I sent them my new and improved resume from class.
Today is the last day for my classes at LHH.
Then I can take online training classes.

See if you can get this Bible answer
for the crossword puzzle of 4-22-2009
4 DOWN: Sister of Rachel (4 letters)
The answer is in Genesis 29:16 if you need help.

"At one point, children were brought to him
so that he could place his hands on them in prayer.
The disciples began to scold them, but Jesus said,
'Let the children come to me.
Do not hinder them.
The kingdom of God belongs to such as these.'
And he laid his hands on their heads
before he left that place."
Matthew 19:13-15

Faith is not that complex.
God made you.
You trust him to take care of you and your family.
You want to be with him forever.
It is elementary.

(April 26, 2009 Sun 8:30 AM CDT)

It's a very rainy morning here in Omaha.
We were 3 inches behind in the average rain fall.
This will help.

Yesterday I picked a retirement gift.
It looks something like this Coby 19-inch TV .
I don't have a HDTV.
I have a 27-inch JVC TV.
I have Qwest Choice TV & Online .

"This point must not be overlooked, dear friends.
In the Lord's eyes,
one day is as a thousand years
and a thousand years are as a day."
2 Peter 3:8

We are only here on earth for a very short time.
We need to keep perspective.
Focus on the Lord.
He will take you home one day.

(April 25, 2009 Sat 9:54 AM CDT)

PC-cillin says that I need to upgrade
from 2007 to the 2009 version.
It is free, so I will give it at try.
OK... that is done.
No big deal.

"Since he was himself tested through what he suffered,
he is able to help those who are tempted."
Hebrews 2:18

Temptation is everywhere in our culture.
Do you ask the Lord for help?
He was tempted also, but never sinned.
We have much to learn.
Pray daily.
Lord, teach us.
Help us in times of temptation.

(April 24, 2009 Fri 7:49 AM CDT)

I met someone yesterday at a networking session at LHH.
They have a job interview today.
I told them that I would pray for them.
Pray for them to do great in the job interview.
God bless them and their family.

I signed up at Linked In yesterday.
I have 4 contacts so far.
It is like Facebook from what I see but for business people.

Two more books arrived in the mail yesterday.
Java How to Program (6th Edition) and
Sams Teach Yourself Java 2 in 21 Days (4th Edition) .
Now I have enough books to read.
I don't have time to go back to work.

I received a catalog in the mail to pick out a retirement gift
from the company I used to work for.
It even says:
"Thank you for your dedication and contributions to our company."
Very nice.

Jesus taught,
"If you live in me,
and my words stay part of you
you may ask what you will ---
it will be done for you."
John 15:7

I believe it.
Just ask for what you need.
It does not take a complicated long prayer.
Jesus wants to bless you.
He is your loving Father.
He will provide.

(April 22, 2009 Wed 6:15 AM CDT)

Last night I forgot to videotape the History Channel.
I always record 6 hours each Tuesday night.
You better pray for me.
I must have had too much on my mind.
I just created a reminder card and put it
in my desk calendar for next Tuesday.

I mowed the front yard for the first time in 2009 yesterday.
I have all the time in the world to do things now.
I used two different lawn mowers to do it.
I am crazy.
The older lawn mower did the better job.

Yesterday I was studying the LHH CRN web site .
This is something to help me find a job.

Yesterday someone from the University of Nebraska at Omaha called.
I had applied on March 30th for a job there.
It took them a long time to call.
I thought they had hired someone else
for the position a long time ago.
I told them that I was not interested
since the job did not pay what I expected.
Maybe I should lower my expectations.
It did not even pay what I made in 1983.
I don't know if I should have done that.
I should have talked to them and see what they had to offer.
A college setting would have to be an interesting place in 2009.
A job interview would have been good practice for me.
The LHH people say to expect the same salary or better
which I find hard to believe.
That's what they say and they are the experts.
I really don't know what I'm doing
since I have not looked for a job in 23 years.
Some people say working for a school is community service
so your pay would not be that high.
And they do have a supercomputer there.

"You must know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,
who is within --- the Spirit you have received from God.
You are not your own.
You have been purchased, and at a price.
So glorify God in your body."
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

You are special.
You are unique.
No one is like you.
God has made you.
You are a one-of-a-kind creation.
You are of great value.
You can do things that no supercomputer can do.
Thank the Lord for your gift of life.
Jesus, you have created me.
You have a plan for my life.
Show me what you want me to do
with my time here on earth.

(April 21, 2009 Tue 8:18 AM CDT)

There were 3 of us in class yesterday.
I learned a few things.
80% of jobs are found by networking .
You have to make contact.
They also said you need to listen to
Baroque music to help your learning.

"After this, the Lord appointed a further 72
and sent them in pairs before him
to every town and place he intended to visit."
Luke 10:1

Public relations.
The Lord needs faithful friends.
Go in the name of Jesus.
Be a witness to the saving power of God.

(April 20, 2009 Mon 6:18 AM CDT)

Last night I was studying chapter 4 of the PHP book.
I really like PHP.

Today I have a class to learn how to find a job.
I have to bring a copy of my resume along.

Paul wrote,
"Three times I begged the Lord
that this might leave me.
He said to me,
'My grace is enough for you,
for in weakness power reaches perfection.'
And so I willingly boast of my weaknesses instead,
that the power of Christ my rest upon me."
2 Corinthians 12:8-9

Are you weak?
Ask the Lord for his power and strength.
He is all powerful.
He wants to help you.
Jesus, help me.
I need your power.
I need your strength.

(April 19, 2009 Sun 8:13 AM CDT)

A friend of mine called yesterday.
Her dad passed away suddenly.
Please, pray for her and all her family.
Jesus, be with them and comfort them.
Jesus, give them strength to get through each day.
Amen.

I just ordered another book.
It is titled
Java How to Program (6th Edition) .
It is a huge book of 1,568 pages.
I'm told they use it in schools to teach the students.

I keep adding more buttons to Code9 (my Sudoku program).
Someday it will all be running in Java (I hope).
It does quite a bit now.
The button for "Guess All Number Left" maxes out memory,
so I have to rewrite that routine.

"On one occasion when Jesus met with them,
he told them not to leave Jerusalem:
'Wait, rather, for the fulfillment of my Father's promise,
of which you have heard me speak.
John baptized with water,
but within a few days
you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'"
Acts 1:4-5

There is a promise.
It is given to you.
Your heavenly Father wants to bless you.
Be open to the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

(April 18, 2009 Sat 9:34 AM CDT)

I'm typing this on my laptop computer in my kitchen.
I figure I better learn how to use my laptop since I have it.

It is a rainy morning here in Omaha.

I planted some day lilies yesterday.
Then I watered them.
I don't have to water them today.

I am up to chapter 3 of the PHP book.
It shows you how to read and write to the MySQL database.
Very nice.

I had to go get my Bible from the computer room.

"The eleven disciples made their way to Galilee,
to the mountain to which Jesus had summoned them.
At the sight of him,
those who entertained doubts fell down in homage."
Matthew 28:16-17

Do you have doubts?
Do you question Jesus?
Come away for a time.
Meet him on the mountain.
He will surprise you.

(April 17, 2009 Fri 9:09 AM CDT)

Yesterday I watched the movie Marley and Me .
It had me laughing.
It only cost $1.07 to rent
from the grocery store DVD machine.
The only problem is --- I don't like dogs.
That's me.
Well, then again, if it's someone else's dog
then that is fine.

Yesterday I had lunch downtown with some people I used to work with.
After lunch we found these important looking papers
blowing around on Farnam Street between 16th and 17th.
It was someone's 2008 tax forms.
They got a $1907 refund from the Federal Return
and $100 something from the State of Nebraska.
We picked up the papers and I tried to go to the address
at 305 South 16th Street , but the doors were locked.
(You can see where we ate at
if you point the viewer to the west side of the street.)
So I took the papers to the company at 644 North Saddle Creek
that filled out the taxes for the person.
I told them to give the person a call
that the papers have been found and recovered.

"And the fact that you are a son or daughter
makes you an heir, by God's design."
Galatians 4:7

God is your Father.
He owns all things.
What more could you ask for?
You are his child.
You have connections.

(April 16, 2009 Thu 6:17 AM CDT and 9:36 AM CDT)

Yesterday I started again to read the book
Beginning PHP6, Apache, MySQL Web Development .
I'm in chapter 2 somewhere (page 50).
They have a "===" test in PHP.
It means "equal to, AND data types match
(both are integers, or both are strings)."
Crazy.
PHP is like Perl.
It has that feel to it.
Just for fun I wrote a test PHP file.

Jesus said,
"I am the good shepherd;
the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
John 10:11

Jesus is there for you.
He is on your side.
He is your best friend.
He wants you to be with him forever.

(April 15, 2009 Wed 6:20 AM CDT)

My back is hurting this morning.
I did too many exercises yesterday.

The neighbors to the north of me got a new roof yesterday.
It was damaged during the June 27, 2008 storm.
I'm reading my entry for June 29th, 2008 and
I have the day of the week wrong for the storm.
It says the storm hit "on Thursday at 4:54 PM",
but June 27th was a Friday.
I was under a lot of stress then
from the loss of electricity at my house.
I wonder if I should put in a claim for my roof also.
My deductible is pretty high.

I'm really getting used to not going to work.
It is nice to have lots of free time.

I signed up yesterday to go to a 4 day class next week.
The class is paid for the company I used to work for.
This will teach me how to update my resume
and how to go on job interviews and
resources to find a job.

Jesus taught,
"You know as well as I
that if the head of the house
knew when the thief was coming
he would not let him break into his house.
Be on guard, therefore.
The Son of Man will come
when you least expect him."
Luke 12:39-40

Are you ready?
What if Jesus knocks on your door today?
Would you jump for joy and let him in?
Would you hesitate and hide from him?

(April 14, 2009 Tue 6:14 AM CDT)

Continued from yesterday...

"They hurried away from the tomb half-overjoyed, half-fearful,
and ran to carry the good news to his disciples.
Suddenly, without warning, Jesus stood before them and said,
'Peace!'
The women came up and embraced his feet and did him homage.
At this Jesus said to them,
'Do not be afraid!
Go and carry the news to my brothers
that they are to go to Galilee,
where they will see me.'"
Matthew 28:8-10

Have no fear.
Have hope.
Carry the wonderful news to your brothers and sisters.
Go and see the risen Lord.

(April 13, 2009 Mon 6:14 AM CDT)

Yesterday at church the first song was my favorite Easter song.

Continued from yesterday...

The guards grew paralyzed with fear of him
and fell down like dead men.
Then the angel spoke, addressing the women:
"Do not be frightened.
I know you are looking for Jesus the crucified,
but he is not here.
He has been raised, exactly as he promised.
Come and see the place where he was laid.
Then go quickly and tell his disciples:
'He has been raised from the dead and
now goes ahead of you to Galilee,
where you will see him.'
That is the message I have for you."
Matthew 28:4-7

Do you have a message for the world?
Do you have something to say?
Do you have something to share?
Jesus has risen from the tomb.
Alleluia.

(April 12, 2009 Sun 8:52 AM CDT)

Happy Easter to you and your family!
Here is my favorite Easter song:
Jesus Christ is Risen Today

"After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning,
Mary Magdalene came with the other Mary to inspect the tomb.
Suddenly there was a mighty earthquake,
as the angel of the Lord descended from heaven.
He came to the stone, rolled it back, and sat on it.
In appearance he resembled a flash of lightning
while his garments were as dazzling as snow."
Matthew 28:1-3

It is amazing to read about Jesus rising from the dead.
No one has ever come back from the dead.
He has all power over life and death.
Learn more about him.

(April 11, 2009 Sat 9:39 AM CDT)

I'm up to chapter 24 in the book.
I'm almost done.

I caught a cold on Wednesday.
At first I took Vicks 44 to knock it out.
It helps a lot.

I make a little progress each day with my Sudoku program.
It does a few things now.
The program has two Java classes:
Code9.class and Code9Event.class .
You run them with the command: java Code9
The "Solve the Puzzle" button works now.
I just typed in this puzzle from 4/8/2009:
.7...2....12.3..4..9..6......3.5..2496.....7572..1.8......9..5..3..8.91....3...6.
and here is the answer in a split second:
376142589512938746498567231183759624964823175725614893841296357637485912259371468
The "Validate the Solution", "Export the values" and
"Import the values" buttons work also.
I am working on converting the buttons
that I use the most first.

This was one of the readings from church yesterday at Boys Town.

"If he gives his life as an offering for sin,
he shall see his descendants in a long life,
and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him."
Isaiah 53:10

Jesus offered up his life for our sins.
He paid the price.
Because of him we have access to eternal life.
Jesus, thank you for all that you have done for us.

(April 10, 2009 Fri 6:08 AM CDT)

It is Good Friday.
We remember what Jesus has done for us today.

"There is no greater love than this:
to lay down one's life for one's friends."
John 15:13

Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for us.

(April 9, 2009 Thu 6:10 AM CDT and 8:09 AM)

It took me awhile but I finished Chapter 17 yesterday.
But you wonder about the usefulness of the topic.

Another book arrived yesterday.
It is titled Beginning ASP.NET 3.5: in C# and VB .
I think I have enough books to read now.
It reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode
with Burgess Meredith and all these books in a library.
He had all the time in the world,
but then he broke his glasses.

"And my prayer is that your sharing
of the faith with others
may enable you to know
all the good which is ours in Christ."
Philemon 1:6

Pray for others.
Share your faith.
Let them know what is good.
Know the Lord of heaven and earth.

(April 8, 2009 Wed 6:09 AM CDT)

When I was waiting for my car to be fixed yesterday
I purchased a book at Borders on 72nd and Dodge Streets.
The book is Beginning PHP6, Apache, MySQL Web Development .
I could have bought it for a lot less online.
I thought I would help them out a little bit.
The place looks like a library.
It is huge.
One guy was very helpful with answering my questions.
I read up to page 40 as I waited
and then my eyes got very tired.
It took about 4 hours to fix my car.
They ordered the wrong starter and then had to reorder
and get the correct one.
Something about left-handed and right-handed on the engine.
I am super tired this morning.
God bless the people that fixed my car and
the people at Borders.

"See, I write to you in my own large handwriting!"
Galatians 6:11

Paul had eye problems.
He wrote in big letters so he could see them.
We all have different problems.
Ask the Lord for strength to endure.
Jesus, help me today.
I can't survive without you.

(April 7, 2009 Tue 6:21 AM CDT)

My car would not start yesterday afternoon.
I called AAA Nebraska and
the guy said I needed a new starter.
I will take the car in today to get it fixed somewhere.
God bless the guy and his family.

I made some progress on my Sudoku program in Java.
Some of the buttons actually work now.
I have to translate the C# to Java.
For example in C# you have this:
string[,,] saveArray = new string[20, 9, 9];
and in Java you have this:
String[][][] saveArray = new String[20][9][9];
So it is close, but not the same.
You could probably write a program to do the translation.
The program has two classes now to run it:
Code9.class and Code9Event.class .
You run them with the command: java Code9

"My brothers and sisters, my heart's desire,
my prayer to God for the Israelites,
is that they may be saved."
Romans 10:1

Jesus was Jewish.
His family was Jewish.
God has a special place in his heart for the Jews.
It is true.
I pray that one day many will come to believe in
their brother Jesus.

(April 6, 2009 Mon 5:10 AM CDT)

On Saturday my brother showed me two videos of lakes that were drained.
The first is Lake Peigneur on November 20, 1980
the second is Lake Delton on June 9, 2008.

Here is a funny picture from the newspaper on Saturday
of these two dogs at the piano .
It had me laughing.

"It happened that Publius' father was sick in bed,
laid up with chronic fever and dysentery,
Paul went in to see the man and, praying,
laid his hands on him and cured him.
After this happened, the rest of the sick on the island
began to come to Paul and they too were healed."
Acts 28:8-9

Jesus, I ask you to heal the sick.
We are in great need.
Come and lay your hands upon us.
Heal us, Lord.

(April 5, 2009 Sun 8:15 AM CDT)

It is raining and snowing this morning in Omaha.
It is springtime.

It is Palm Sunday.
It is Holy Week 2009.
Open yourself to many blessings from the Lord this week.

"They spread their cloaks on the roadside as Jesus moved along;
and on his approach to the descent from Mount Olivet,
the entire crowd of disciples began to rejoice and
praise God loudly for the display of power they had seen, saying:
'Blessed is he who comes as king in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!'
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him,
'Teacher, rebuke your disciples.'
He replied, 'If they were to keep silence,
I tell you the very stones would cry out.'"
Luke 19:36-40

Give praise to God.
Raise your voice.
Shout for joy.
The king has come.

(April 4, 2009 Sat 10:12 AM CDT)

Yesterday I was working on converting my Sudoku code9
program to Java.
You can save this file to your PC and
then run it with the command "java Code9".
It did not run on my laptop with ubuntu,
so I'm not sure what happened.
It gets some error that it can't find a Java library.
When it does work it paints the screen,
but none of the buttons function yet.
I still have to translate many C# statements to Java.
It does work on my XP PC.
It works on my laptop with Windows 7 Beta
after I installed Java .
I'm having problems with a JTextArea displaying correctly.
I might have to move it to the bottom of the screen.

"The message of the cross is complete absurdity
to those who are headed for ruin,
but to us who are experiencing salvation
it is the power of God."
1 Corinthians 1:18

It depends on your point of view.
If you know Jesus, the cross makes sense.
If you don't know Jesus, no explanation is possible.
It is very hard to understand so great a love.

(April 3, 2009 Fri 5:56 AM CDT)

Yesterday I was reading about Swing and AWT (Abstract Windowing Toolkit).
So today one of my goals is to translate my
Sudoku program from C# to Java.
It will be interesting to see how far I can get.
I even did an hour of exercises (sit-ups, etc.) yesterday.
I have not done that since January.

"When the commander arrived on the scene,
he arrested Paul and bound him with double irons.
He tried to find out who he was and what he had been doing,
but different people in the crowd shouted out different answers."
Acts 21:33-34

Paul caused a riot in Jerusalem.
He stirred things up.
He was a troublemaker.
He got arrested for being a witness to Christ.
What is the answer?
Will you follow Christ no matter what the cost?

(April 2, 2009 Thu 6:18 AM CDT)

Did I accomplish anything yesterday?
I got my wireless network router talking
to my ipod and laptop.
That took some effort.
I set that as a goal yesterday and stuck with it.
You accomplish more if you set goals.

Jesus said,
"...once I am lifted up from the earth ---
I will draw all people to myself."
John 12:32

Jesus is there on the cross.
You can't ignore him.
It is something to see.
He died for you and me.
Come to Jesus.
See a love you can't explain.

(April 1, 2009 Wed 6:26 AM CDT)

Yesterday I ran into my boss from 23 years ago at a restaurant.
I told him that I lost my job March 10th.
He retired 8 years ago and works 12 hours a week for UPS.
It is something to do.
We talked a little about the people we used to work with
are all retired.

My car hit 128,000 miles yesterday.
I'm putting more miles on my car now.

Yesterday I wrote a Perl script .
I used it to generate 1.9 million SQL INSERT statements.
I loaded the 1.9 million rows into a mySQL database.
I built indexes on 6 of the columns.
I am impressed.
Very nice.

"Jesus said to the man,
'Ephphatha!' (that is, 'Be opened!')
At once the man's ears were opened;
he was freed from the impediment,
and began to speak plainly."
Mark 7:34-35

What is holding you back?
What is stopping you from going forward?
Open your ears.
Open your eyes.
Jesus has much to tell you.
Jesus has much to show you.
